Application of spot data to a base-line ecological study of the mahakam delta mangroves (east kalimantan, indonesia) ArchiMer
Dutrieux, Eric; Denis, Jacques; Populus, Jacques.
The objective of this study is to explain the spatial and temporal distribution of the vegetal communities of the Mahakam delta, chiefly on the basis of its physical and chemical characteristics. The delta is at present subjected to intense oil exploitation, and it is necessary to describe the situation on the site and its natural evolution in arder to be able to evaluate the damage that accidentai oil spillage could cause. The authors provide elements to define the sensitive zones whose protection should be a matter of priority. SPOT imagery was chosen as the tool allowing such an approach on a delta measuring 1 500 km2 SPOT satellite images of the Mahakam delta show that different plant communities succeed one another bath in time and in space. The...

Effects of petroleum biodegradation products on phytoplankton growth. ArchiMer
Goutx, H; Berland, B; Leveau, M; Bertrand, J.
The effects of products resulting from petroleum biodegradation in continuous culture, have been studied on the growth of two marine algae. Sugars, lipids and amino acids are the main components resulting from petroleum degradation in the bacteria used medium. Their concentrations are respectively 600 mg.l super(-1), 46 mg.l super(-1) and 74.2 mu M.l super(-1). The algae growth is inhibited when products are enough concentrated; it is stimulated by low concentration. Among these products, lipids are more toxic than others. The two species show different sensitivity towards the used medium. Prorocentrum micans growth is more inhibited than that of Phaeodactylum tricornutum .

Operational oil-slick characterization by SAR imagery and synergistic data ArchiMer
Ardhuin, Fanny; Mercier, G; Collard, F; Garello, R.
A methodology is proposed for the semiautomatic detection, characterization, and classification of slicks detected in C-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR). For the first detection step, automatic algorithms were tested on Environmental Research Satellite (ERS) and Environmental Satellite (EnviSat) images acquired during the Prestige tanker accident. These tests reveal that simple filter or segmentation methods efficiently detect slicks with high contrasts and simple shapes, while a new and more complex multiscale method is able to detect a wider range of slicks. The characteristics of automatically detected slicks are then combined with meteooceanic data in order to eliminate slicks related to wind anomalies and current fronts. The data suggest that...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and aromatic plasticiser materials in the sea water of alexandria coastal area OceanDocs
Emara, H.I.; El-Deeb, M.K.Z..
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the real contaminants of petroleum, were detected in the surface seawater of Alexandria coastal area in winter and spring seasons of 1995. Their order of predominance, particularly for the individual components were principally due to the processes of input, transport and fluxes. Variation of PAHs was not following seasonal changes but it was slightly affected by partial dissolution of the lowerboiling aromatic hydrocarbons. The most abundant component of aromatic hydrocarbons was pyrene (PAH),112ngI-1 followed by naphthalene(56ngI-1) and its alkylated derivatives (dicyclic), then phenanthrene(14ngI-1) and its methylated derivatives (tricyclic). The potential fish carcinogenic PAH, dibenz [a & c] anthracene was...

Preliminary studies on the initial weathering of oil on water. OceanDocs
Oyewo, E.O..
Laboratory-scale studies on the initial weathering of some oils on water by evaporative loss and dissolution have been carried out. Evaporation rate was dependent on the type of oil and was accelerated by increased temperature, number retarded evaporation rate. The order of evaporation rate was Gas Oil >Diesel Oil > Medium fuel Oil. Dissolution rate, which varied with the type of oil, was retarded by salinity but promoted by increased temperature. With the mono-component oils tested, the cyclic, aromatic and iso-characters increased dissolution rate. The order of dissolution rate for the commercial oils was Gas Oil  Diesel Oil > Medium Fuel Oil.

Reduction du nitrate dans les sediments marins. Comparaison des activites mesurees in vitro et in situ ArchiMer
Esteves, J; Bonin, P; Blanc, F; Mille, G; Bertrand, J.
In vitro nitrate reduction in hydrocarbon-polluted marine sediments has been studied by flow-through system. By analysing the rate of nitrate comsumption as a function of nitrate concentration the authors determined the Michaelis-Menten kinetics parameters. (km = 330 mu M; vax = 2.0 mu M/g super(-1)/h super(-1). The authors found a value of 60 mu M/m super(-2)/h super(-1) for the rate of in vitro nitrate consumption derived from the above kinetic parameters and from the nitrate concentration in the sediment. In parallel a value of 67.4 mu M/m super(-2)/h super(-1) was found for the rate of nitrate consumption under in situ conditions. The great similarity between both results would favor the in vitro technique as a valid and more convenient one.

Wave Breaking in Slicks: Impacts on C-Band Quad-Polarized SAR Measurements ArchiMer
Wergeland, Morten; Kudryavtsev, Vladimir; Chapron, Bertrand; Brekke, Camilla; Johannessen, Johnny A..
Radarsat-2 C-band quad-polarization SAR observations of crude oil, emulsion, and plant oil slicks acquired in the wind speed range from 4 to 8 m/s and incidence angles from 30 degrees to 50 degrees are analyzed to yield new insights into the attenuation of short waves and breaking waves by surface slicks in real conditions. To provide a direct quantitative assessment of the surface wave damping, the measurements are decomposed into polarization difference (PD), polarization ratio (PR), nonpolarized (NP), and cross-polarized (CP) components. The PD signals relate to the extent of Bragg damping in the slick areas, over which the PR is systematically higher than over the ambient sea surface. Attenuation of the breaking waves is revealed to affect both the CP...

Загрязнение Геленджикской бухты ливневым стоком IBSS Repository
Крыленко, В. В.; Есин, Н. В..
